That afternoon the dream of the toadsA
rang through the elms by Little RiverB
and affected the thoughts of menC
though they were not conscious thatD
they heard it Henry ThoreauE

The dream of toads we rarelyF
credit what we consider lesserB
life with emotions big as oursG
but we are easily distractedH
abstracted People sit nibblingI
before television's flicker watchingI
ghosts chase balls and each otherB
while the skunk is out risking grislyF
death to cross the highway to mateJ
while the fox scales the wire fenceK
where it knows the shotgun lurksL
to taste the sweet blood of a henC
Birds are greedy little bombsM
bursting to give voice to appetiteN
I had a cat who died of loveO
Dogs trail their masters across conP
tinents We are far too busyF
to be starkly simple in passionQ
We will never dream the intenseK
wet spring lust of the toadsA
