The day is dead and in the westA
The slender crescent of the moonB
Diana's crystal kindled crestA
Sinks hillward in a silvery swoonB
What is the murmur in the dellC
The stealthy whisper and the dripD
A Dryad with her leaf light tripD
Or Naiad o'er her fountain wellC
Who with white fingers for her combE
Sleeks her blue hair and from its curlsF
Showers slim minnows and pale pearlsF
And hollow music of the foamE
What is it in the vistaed waysG
That leans and springs and stoops and swaysG
The naked limbs of one who fleesH
An Oread who hesitatesI
Before the Satyr form that waitsI
Crouching to leap that there she seesH
Or under boughs reclining coolJ
A Hamadryad like a poolJ
Of moonlight palely beautifulK
Or Limnad with her lilied faceL
More lovely than the misty laceL
That haunts a star and gives it graceL
Or is it some LeimoniadA
In wildwood flowers dimly cladA
Oblong blossoms white as frothM
Or mottled like the tiger mothM
Or brindled as the brows of deathN
Wild of hue and wild of breathN
Here ethereal flame and milkO
Blent with velvet and with silkO
Here an iridescent glowP
Mixed with satin and with snowP
Pansy poppy and the paleQ
Serpolet and galingaleQ
Mandrake and anemoneR
Honey reservoirs o' the beeS
Cistus and the cyclamenR
Cheeked like blushing Hebe thisT
And the other white as isU
Bubbled milk of Venus whenR
Cupid's baby mouth is pressedA
Rosy to her rosy breastA
And besides all flowers that mateA
With aroma and in hueV
Stars and rainbows duplicateA
Here on earth for me and youV
-
Yea at last mine eyes can seeS
'Tis no shadow of the treeS
Swaying softly there but sheS
M nad Bassarid BacchantA
What you will who doth enchantA
Night with sensuous nudityA
Lo again I hear her pantA
Breasting through the dewy gloomsS
Through the glow worm gleams and glowersS
Of the starlight wood perfumesS
Swoon around her and frail showersS
Of the leaflet tilted rainR
Lo like love she comes againR
Through the pale voluptuous duskW
Sweet of limb with breasts of muskW
With her lips like blossoms breathingX
Honeyed pungence of her kissS
And her auburn tresses wreathingX
Like umbrageous helichrysS
There she stands like fire and snowR
In the moon's ambrosial glowR
Both her shapely loins low loopedA
With the balmy blossoms droopedA
Of the deep amaracusS
Spiritual yet sensualQ
Lo she ever greets me thusS
In my vision white and tallQ
Her delicious body thereY
Raimented with amorous airY
To my mind expresses allQ
The allurements of the worldA
And once more I seem to feelQ
On my soul like frenzy hurledA
All the passionate past I reelQ
Greek again in ancient GreeceS
In the Pyrrhic revelriesS
In the mad and M nad danceS
Onward dragged with violenceS
Pan and old Silenus andA
Faunus and a Bacchant bandA
Round me Wild my wine stained handA
O'er tumultuous hair is liftedA
While the flushed and Phallic orgiesS
Whirl around me and the margesS
Of the wood are torn and riftedA
With lascivious laugh and shoutA
And barbarian there againR
Shameless with the shameless routA
Bacchus lusting in each veinR
With her pagan lips on mineR
Like a god made drunk with wineR
On I reel and in the revelsS
Her loose hair the dance dishevelsS
Blows and 'thwart my vision swimsS
All the splendor of her limbsS
-
So it seems Yet woods are lonelyA
And when I again awakeX
I shall find their faces onlyA
Moonbeams in the boughs that shakeX
And their revels but the rushZ
Of night winds through bough and brushZ
Yet my dreaming is it moreA2
Than mere dreaming Is some doorA2
Opened in my soul a curtainR
Raised to let me see for certainR
I have lived that life beforeA2
