The 'happy year' ofA
AN hour from dawnB
The snow sweeps onC
As it swept with sleet last nightD
The Earth aroundE
Breathes never a soundE
Wrapped in its shroud of whiteD
A waked cock crowsF
Under the snowsF
Then silence After whileG
The sky grows blueH
And a star looks throughH
With a kind o' bitter smileG
A whining dogI
An axe on a logI
And a muffled voice that callsJ
A cow's long lowK
Then footsteps slowK
Stamping into the stallsJ
A bed of strawL
Where the wind blows rawM
Through cracks of the stable doorN
A child's small cryO
A voice nearbyO
That says 'One mouth the more 'P
A different noteQ
In a man's rough throatQ
As he turns at an entering treadR
Satyrs seeS
'My woman sheS
Was brought last night to bed 'P
A cry of 'Halt 'P
'Ach ich bin kalt 'P
'A spy ' 'No ' 'That is clearT
There's a good shake downU
I' the jail in townU
For her ' And then 'My orders here 'P
A shot sharp rolledV
As the clouds unfoldV
A scream and a cry forlornW
Clothed red with fireX
Like the Heart's DesireX
Look down the Christmas MornW
The babe with lightD
Is haloed brightD
And it is Christmas DayY
A cry of woeK
Then footsteps slowK
And the wild guns far awayY
