IA
-
I belt the morn with ribboned mistB
With baldricked blue I gird the noonC
And dusk with purple crimson kissedB
White buckled with the hunter's moonC
-
These follow me the Season saysD
Mine is the frost pale hand that packsE
Their scrips and speeds them on their waysF
With gypsy gold that weighs their backsE
-
IIA
-
A daybreak horn the Autumn blowsG
As with a sun tanned hand he partsH
Wet boughs whereon the berry glowsG
And at his feet the red fox startsH
-
The leafy leash that holds his houndsI
Is loosed and all the noonday hushJ
Is startled and the hillside soundsI
Behind the fox's bounding brushJ
-
When red dusk makes the western skyA
A fire lit window through the firsK
He stoops to see the red fox dieA
Among the chestnut's broken burrsK
-
Then fanfaree and fanfareeL
His bugle sounds the world belowM
Grows hushed to hear and two or threeL
Soft stars dream through the afterglowM
-
IIIA
-
Like some black host the shadows fallN
And blackness camps among the treesK
Each wildwood road a Goblin HallN
Grows populous with mysteriesK
-
Night comes with brows of ragged stormO
And limbs of writhen cloud and mistB
The rain wind hangs upon his armP
Like some wild girl who cries unkissedB
-
By his gaunt hands the leaves are shedB
In headlong troops and nightmare herdsK
And like a witch who calls the deadB
The hill stream whirls with foaming wordsK
-
Then all is sudden silence andB
Dark fear like his who cannot seeL
Yet hears lost in a haunted landB
Death rattling on a gallow's treeL
-
IV-
-
The days approach again the daysK
Whose mantles stream whose sandals dragQ
When in the haze by puddled waysK
The gnarled thorn seems a crooked hagQ
-
When rotting orchards reek with rainR
And woodlands crumble leaf and logS
And in the drizzling yard againT
The gourd is tagged with points of fogU
-
Now let me seat my soul amongV
The woods' dim dreams and come in touchW
With melancholy sad of tongueV
And sweet who says so much so muchW
