Rhyme Scheme: ABCDAE FGHGII JKIKL CM CNO PQR STUVWXY YZ A2BEAB2 BEIC2D2

One summer she goes into the field as usualA
stopping for a bit at the pool where she oftenB
looks at herself to seeC
if she detects any changes She seesD
the same person the horrible mantleA
of daughterliness still clinging to herE
-
The sun seems in the water very closeF
That's my uncle spying again she thinksG
everything in nature is in some way her relativeH
I am never alone she thinksG
turning the thought into a prayerI
Then death appears like the answer to a prayerI
-
No one understands anymoreJ
how beautiful he was But Persephone remembersK
Also that he embraced her right thereI
with her uncle watching She remembersK
sunlight flashing on his bare armsL
-
This is the last moment she remembers clearlyC
Then the dark god bore her awayM
-
She also remembers less clearlyC
the chilling insight that from this momentN
she couldn't live without him againO
-
The girl who disappears from the poolP
will never return A woman will returnQ
looking for the girl she wasR
-
She stands by the pool saying from time to timeS
I was abducted but it soundsT
wrong to her nothing like what she feltU
Then she says I was not abductedV
Then she says I offered myself I wantedW
to escape my body Even sometimesX
I willed this But ignoranceY
-
cannot will knowledge IgnoranceY
wills something imagined which it believes existsZ
-
All the different nounsA2
she says them in rotationB
Death husband god strangerE
Everything sounds so simple so conventionalA
I must have been she thinks a simple girlB2
-
She can't remember herself as that personB
but she keeps thinking the pool will rememberE
and explain to her the meaning of her prayerI
so she can understandC2
whether it was answered or notD2
