| how strong we were how dazed by passion | B |
| lying all day then all night in the narrow bed | C |
| sleeping there eating there too it was summer | D |
| it seemed everything had ripened | E |
| at once And so hot we lay completely uncovered | F |
| Sometimes the wind rose a willow brushed the window | G |

| But we were lost in a way didn't you feel that | H |
| The bed was like a raft I felt us drifting | I |
| far from our natures toward a place where we'd discover nothing | I |
| First the sun then the moon in fragments | J |
| stone through the willow | G |
| Things anyone could see | K |

| Then the circles closed Slowly the nights grew cool | L |
| the pendant leaves of the willow | G |
| yellowed and fell And in each of us began | M |
| a deep isolation though we never spoke of this | N |
| of the absence of regret | O |
| We were artists again my husband | E |
| We could resume the journey | K |
