| people are dying And that's just the beginning | B |
| Every day in funeral homes new widows are born | C |
| new orphans They sit with their hands folded | D |
| trying to decide about this new life | E |

| Then they're in the cemetery some of them | F |
| for the first time They're frightened of crying | B |
| sometimes of not crying Someone leans over | G |
| tells them what to do next which might mean | H |
| saying a few words sometimes | I |
| throwing dirt in the open grave | J |

| And after that everyone goes back to the house | K |
| which is suddenly full of visitors | L |
| The widow sits on the couch very stately | M |
| so people line up to approach her | G |
| sometimes take her hand sometimes embrace her | G |
| She finds something to say to everbody | D |
| thanks them thanks them for coming | B |

| In her heart she wants them to go away | A |
| She wants to be back in the cemetery | M |
| back in the sickroom the hospital She knows | N |
| it isn't possible But it's her only hope | O |
| the wish to move backward And just a little | P |
| not so far as the marriage the first kiss | Q |
