I sit upon the rocks that frown	B

Above the rapid Nile	C

And on the toil of man look down	B

My rocks are inaccessible	D

And few return their terrors to tell	E

My subjects are the birds whose wings	F

Never soar'd into other air	G

To whose shrill cries each echo rings	F

For their nests are hidden there	G

They dip their plumes in that mighty river	H

Whose course is onward onward for ever	H

I see the deluge come sweeping on	I

Where waving corn fields gleam	J

And forests and cities and herds are gone	K

Like the shadows of a dream	J

The rushing tide is an ocean now	L

And islands of ruin darken its brow	L

But the waters sink and earth again	M

Smiles under Nature's gentlest reign	N

Where from scenes of bliss shall I go	O

I whose existence is terror and woe	O

Now I hide in the burning breast	P

Of some mountain whose fires are never at rest	P

And urge the torrents that downward flow	O

Crashing and swallowing all below	O

Then through the air away away	Q

Till I check my course on the dread Himmaleh	O

Down to its deepest valleys I dive	R

Which no mortal can ever see and live	R

To visit the evil spirits who dwell	O

In the ceaseless gloom of that murky dell	O

With them from their rocky temples I roam	S

To lure the traveller from his home	S

When he rests beneath some charmed tree	T

With dreams we vex his mind	U

And he wakes our hideous forms to see	T

As we hover upon the wind	U

And our voices howl in the hurrying blast	V

Till in frantic fear he breathes his last	V

Then we bear him to our dismal cave	W

And his tortured spirit we claim as our slave	W

I dwell where tempests are loud and dread	X

I ride on the billow's foam	S

And wherever terror is widest spread	X

There is the Spirit's home	S
