-
-
-
I sit upon the rocks that frownB
-
Above the rapid NileC
-
And on the toil of man look downB
-
With bitter and scornful smileC
-
My rocks are inaccessibleD
-
And few return their terrors to tellE
-
-
My subjects are the birds whose wingsF
-
Never soar'd into other airG
-
To whose shrill cries each echo ringsF
-
For their nests are hidden thereG
-
They dip their plumes in that mighty riverH
-
Whose course is onward onward for everH
-
-
I see the deluge come sweeping onI
-
Where waving corn fields gleamJ
-
And forests and cities and herds are goneK
-
Like the shadows of a dreamJ
-
-
The rushing tide is an ocean nowL
-
And islands of ruin darken its browL
-
-
But the waters sink and earth againM
-
Smiles under Nature's gentlest reignN
-
Where from scenes of bliss shall I goO
-
I whose existence is terror and woeO
-
Now I hide in the burning breastP
-
Of some mountain whose fires are never at restP
-
And urge the torrents that downward flowO
-
Crashing and swallowing all belowO
-
-
Then through the air away awayQ
-
Till I check my course on the dread HimmalehO
-
Down to its deepest valleys I diveR
-
Which no mortal can ever see and liveR
-
To visit the evil spirits who dwellO
-
In the ceaseless gloom of that murky dellO
-
-
With them from their rocky temples I roamS
-
To lure the traveller from his homeS
-
When he rests beneath some charmed treeT
-
With dreams we vex his mindU
-
And he wakes our hideous forms to seeT
-
As we hover upon the windU
-
-
And our voices howl in the hurrying blastV
-
Till in frantic fear he breathes his lastV
-
Then we bear him to our dismal caveW
-
And his tortured spirit we claim as our slaveW
-
-
I dwell where tempests are loud and dreadX
-
I ride on the billow's foamS
-
And wherever terror is widest spreadX
-
There is the Spirit's homeS
