Long ago in a poultry yardA
One dull November mornB
Beneath a motherly soft wingC
A little goose was bornB
-
Who straightway peeped out of the shellD
To view the world beyondE
Longing at once to sally forthF
And paddle in the pondE
-
Oh be not rash her father saidG
A mild Socratic birdH
Her mother begged her not to strayI
With many a warning wordH
-
But little goosey was perverseJ
And eagerly did cryK
I've got a lovely pair of wingsL
Of course I ought to flyK
-
In vain parental cacklingsL
In vain the cold sky's frownM
Ambitious goosey tried to soarN
But always tumbled downM
-
The farmyard jeered at her attemptsL
The peacocks screamed Oh fieO
You're only a domestic gooseL
So don't pretend to flyK
-
Great cock a doodle from his perchP
Crowed daily loud and clearQ
Stay in the puddle foolish birdH
That is your proper sphereQ
-
The ducks and hens said one and allR
In gossip by the poolS
Our children never play such pranksL
My dear that fowl's a foolS
-
The owls came out and flew aboutT
Hooting above the restU
No useful egg was ever hatchedV
From transcendental nestU
-
Good little goslings at their playI
And well conducted chicksL
Were taught to think poor goosey's flightsL
Were naughty ill bred tricksL
-
They were content to swim and scratchW
And not at all inclinedX
For any wild goose chase in searchP
Of something undefinedX
-
Hard times she had as one may guessL
That young aspiring birdH
Who still from every fall aroseL
Saddened but undeterredH
-
She knew she was no nightingaleY
Yet spite of much abuseL
She longed to help and cheer the worldZ
Although a plain gray gooseL
-
She could not sing she could not flyK
Nor even walk with graceL
And all the farmyard had declaredA2
A puddle was her placeL
-
But something stronger than herselfO
Would cry Go on go onB2
Remember though an humble fowlC2
You're cousin to a swanB2
-
So up and down poor goosey wentD2
A busy hopeful birdH
Searched many wide unfruitful fieldsL
And many waters stirredH
-
At length she came unto a streamE2
Most fertile of all NilesL
Where tuneful birds might soar and singC
Among the leafy islesL
-
Here did she build a little nestU
Beside the waters stillF2
Where the parental goose could restU
Unvexed by any billF2
-
And here she paused to smooth her plumesL
Ruffled by many plaguesL
When suddenly arose the cryK
This goose lays golden eggsL
-
At once the farmyard was agogG2
The ducks began to quackH2
Prim Guinea fowls relenting calledI2
Come back come back come backH2
-
Great chanticleer was pleased to giveO
A patronizing crowJ2
And the contemptuous biddies cluckedI2
I wish my chicks did soJ2
-
The peacocks spread their shining tailsL
And cried in accents softI2
We want to know you gifted oneK2
Come up and sit aloftI2
-
Wise owls awoke and gravely saidI2
With proudly swelling breastsL
Rare birds have always been evokedI2
From transcendental nestsL
-
News hunting turkeys from afarL2
Now ran with all thin legsL
To gobble facts and fictions ofO
The goose with golden eggsL
-
But best of all the little fowlsL
Still playing on the shoreN
Soft downy chicks and goslings gayI
Chirped out Dear Goose lay moreN
-
But goosey all these weary yearsL
Had toiled like any antI2
And wearied out she now repliedI2
My little dears I can'tI2
-
When I was starving half this cornB
Had been of vital useL
Now I am surfeited with foodI2
Like any Strasbourg gooseL
-
So to escape too many friendsL
Without uncivil strifeO
She ran to the Atlantic pondI2
And paddled for her lifeO
-
Soon up among the grand old AlpsL
She found two blessed thingsL
The health she had so nearly lostI2
And rest for weary limbsL
-
But still across the briny deepM2
Couched in most friendly wordsL
Came prayers for letters tales or verseL
From literary birdsL
-
Whereat the renovated fowlC2
With grateful thanks profuseL
Took from her wing a quill and wroteI2
This lay of a Golden GooseL
