Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American novelist. She is best known for the novel Little Women, published in 1868. Due to her familys poverty, she began work at an early age as an occasional teacher, seamstress, governess, domestic helper, and writer - her first book was Flower Fables (1854). As she grew older, she developed as both an abolitionist and a feminist. A lesserknown part of her work are the passionate, fiery novels and stories she wrote, usually under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard, such as A Long Fatal Love Chase (1866). Alcott also produced moralistic and wholesome stories for children, and a semi-autobiographical tale Work (1873). In her later life, Alcott became an advocate of womens suffrage and was part of a group of female authors during the U. S. Gilded Age to address womens issues in a modern and candid manner. Despite worsening health, Alcott wrote through the rest of her life.

Perhaps freed by the anonymity this guise granted, she delves deeply into issues of gender, family, and social class in this story that focuses on the relationship between a governess and the family she works for.

If any one had asked Johnny Morris who were his best friends, he would have answered, -- "The sun and the wind, next to mother." Johnny lived in a little court that led off from one of the busiest streets in the city, --a noisy street, where horse-car bells tinkled and omnibuses rumbled all day long, going and coming from several great depots near by. The court was a dull place, with only two or three shabby houses in it, and a high blank wall at the end. The people who hurried by were too busy to do more than to glance at the lame boy who sat in the sunshine against the wall, or to guess that there was a picture-gallery and a circulating-library in the court. But Johnny had both, and took such comfort in them that he never could be grateful enough to the wind that brought him his books and pictures, nor to the sun that made it possible for him to enjoy them in the open air, far more than richer folk enjoy their fine galleries and libraries.

Charles Lamb Poem
Which Is The Favourite?
 by Charles Lamb

Brothers and sisters I have many:
Though I know there is not any
Of them but I love, yet I
Will just name them all; and try
If there be one a little more
Loved by me than all the rest.
Yes; I do think, that I love best
My brother Henry, because he
