CHEERFUL voices by the sea sideA
Echoed through the summer airB
Happy children fresh and rosyC
Sang and sported freely thereB
Often turning friendly glancesD
Where neglectful of them allE
On his bed among the gray rocksF
Mused the pale child little PaulE
-
For he never joined their pastimesG
Never danced upon the sandH
Only smiled upon them kindlyC
Only waved his wasted handH
Many a treasured gift they bore himI
Best beloved among them allE
Many a childish heart grieved sadlyC
Thinking of poor little PaulE
-
But while Florence was beside himI
While her face above him bentJ
While her dear voice sounded near himI
He was happy and contentJ
Watching ever the great billowsK
Listening to their ceaseless fallE
For they brought a pleasant musicL
To the ear of little PaulE
-
'Sister Floy ' the pale child whisperedM
'What is that the blue waves sayN
What strange message are they bringingO
From that shore so far awayN
Who is dwelling in that countryC
Whence a low voice seems to callE
Softly through the dash of watersP
'Come away my little Paul' '-
-
But sad Florence could not answerQ
Though her dim eyes tenderlyC
Watched the wistful face that everQ
Gazed across the restless seaC
While the sunshine like a blessingO
On his bright hair seemed to fallE
And the winds grew more caressingO
As they kissed frail little PaulE
-
Ere long paler and more wastedR
On another bed he layN
Where the city's din and discordS
Echoed round him day by dayN
While the voice that to his spiritT
By the sea side seemed to callE
Sounded with its tender musicL
Very near to little PaulE
-
As the deep tones of the oceanU
Linger in the frailest shellV
So the lonely sea side musingsW
In his memory seemed to dwellV
And he talked of golden watersP
Rippling on his chamber wallE
While their melody in fancyC
Cheered the heart of little PaulE
-
Clinging fast to faithful FlorenceX
Murmuring faintly night and dayN
Of the swift and darksome riverQ
Bearing him so far awayN
Toward a shore whose blessed sunshineY
Seemed most radiantly to fallE
On a beautiful mild spiritT
Waiting there for little PaulE
-
So the tide of life ebbed slowlyC
Till the last wave died awayN
And nothing but the fragile wreckZ
On the sister's bosom layN
And from out death's solemn watersP
Lifted high above them allE
In her arms the spirit motherQ
Bore the soul of little PaulE
