A Lament For S. B. Pat Paw Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK GMAM NEOE

We mourn the loss of our little petA
And sigh o'er her hapless fateB
For never more by the fire she'll sitC
Nor play by the old green gateB
-
The little grave where her infant sleepsD
Is 'neath the chestnut treeE
But o'er her grave we may not weepF
We know not where it may beE
-
Her empty bed her idle ballG
Will never see her moreH
No gentle tap no loving purrI
Is heard at the parlor doorH
-
Another cat comes after her miceJ
A cat with a dirty faceK
But she does not hunt as our darling didL
Nor play with her airy graceK
-
Her stealthy paws tread the very hallG
Where Snowball used to playM
But she only spits at the dogs our petA
So gallantly drove awayM
-
She is useful and mild and does her bestN
But she is not fair to seeE
And we cannot give her your place dearO
Nor worship her as we worship theeE
