Prayer Before Birth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABA AAAA ACDA AEAAFA AGHDIJA AKA AFLMNOPQBA AA

I am not yet born O hear meA
Let not the bloodsucking bat or the rat or the stoat or theB
club footed ghoul come near meA
-
I am not yet born console meA
I fear that the human race may with tall walls wall meA
with strong drugs dope me with wise lies lure meA
on black racks rack me in blood baths roll meA
-
I am not yet born provide meA
With water to dandle me grass to grow for me trees to talkC
to me sky to sing to me birds and a white lightD
in the back of my mind to guide meA
-
I am not yet born forgive meA
For the sins that in me the world shall commit my wordsE
when they speak me my thoughts when they think meA
my treason engendered by traitors beyond meA
my life when they murder by means of myF
hands my death when they live meA
-
I am not yet born rehearse meA
In the parts I must play and the cues I must take whenG
old men lecture me bureaucrats hector me mountainsH
frown at me lovers laugh at me the whiteD
waves call me to folly and the desert callsI
me to doom and the beggar refusesJ
my gift and my children curse meA
-
I am not yet born O hear meA
Let not the man who is beast or who thinks he is GodK
come near meA
-
I am not yet born O fill meA
With strength against those who would freeze myF
humanity would dragoon me into a lethal automatonL
would make me a cog in a machine a thing withM
one face a thing and against all thoseN
who would dissipate my entirety wouldO
blow me like thistledown hither andP
thither or hither and thitherQ
like water held in theB
hands would spill meA
-
Let them not make me a stone and let them not spill meA
Otherwise kill meA
