Ennui Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFDFE GHIHJKJJLJ MNMGFJJFJJ

Alas and oh that Spring should come againA
Upon the soft wings of desired daysB
And bring with her no anodyne to painC
And no discernment of untroubled waysB
There was a time when her yet distant feetD
Guessed by some prescience more than half divineE
Gave to my listening ear such happy warningF
That fresh serene and sweetD
My thoughts soared up like larks into the morningF
From the dew sprinkled meadows crystallineE
-
Soared up into the heights celestialG
And saw the whole world like a ball of fireH
Fashioned to be a monster playing ballI
For the enchantment of my young desireH
And yesterday they flew to this black cloudJ
Missing the way to those ethereal spheresK
And saw the earth a vision of affrightJ
And men a sordid crowdJ
And felt the fears and drank the bitter tearsL
And saw the empty houses of DelightJ
-
The sun has sunk into a moonless seaM
And every road leads down from Heaven to HellN
The pearls are numbered on youth's rosaryM
I have outlived the days desirableG
What is there left And how shall dead men singF
Unto the loosened strings of Love and HateJ
Or take strong hands to Beauty's ravishmentJ
Who shall devise this thingF
To give high utterance to MiscontentJ
Or make indifference articulateJ
