The soldiers lie upon the snowA
That no longer gyrates under the spinning lightsB
Night juggles in her fat black handsC
They will not babble any more secrets to loose mouthedD
nightsB
Expanding in golden aurasB
While sleigh bells jingle like new coins the darknessB
shufflesB
They will not drink any more wineE
Wine of the RomanoffsB
Jewelled wineE
The secret years worked slowly atF
Till it was wrought to fireG
As stones are facetedH
Until they give out lightI
The soldiers lie very stillJ
Their shadows have shrunk up closeB
As toads shrink under a stoneK
And night and silenceB
The ancient croniesB
Foregather above themL
-
But still over the snow that is white as a ram's fleeceB
Arms swing like scythesB
And shadows in austere linesB
Sway in a monstrous and mysterious ritualM
Shadows of the Kronstad sailorsB
Pouring blood and wineE
WineE
Spurting out of flagons in a spray of amethyst and goldN
Creeping in purple sluicesB
WineE
And blood in thin bright streamsB
Besprinkling the immaculate snowA
Blood high powered with the heat of old vineyardsB
Boring into the cool snowA
Blood and wineE
Mingling in bright poolsB
That suck at the lights of PetrogradN
As dying eyesB
Suck in their last sunsetN
-
The night has a rare savorG
Out of the snow piles altar high and colored as by aO
rosy sacrifice Scented vaporG
Ascends in a pale incenseB
Faint astringent perfumeP
Of blood and wineE
