The Legion Of Iron Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNH HO PHHQEQHHBKRHHB

They pass through the great iron gatesA
Men with eyes gravely discerningB
Skilled to appraise the tunnage of cranesC
Or split an inch into thousandthsD
Men tempered by fire as the ore isE
And planned to resistanceF
Like steel that has cooled in the troughG
Silent of purpose inflexible set to fulfilmentH
To conquer withstand overthrowI
Men mannered to large undertakingsJ
Knowing force as a brotherK
And power as something to play withL
Seeing blood as a slip of the ironM
To be wiped from the toolsN
Lest they rustH
-
But what if they stood asideH
Who hold the earth so careless in the crook of their armsO
-
What of the flamboyant citiesP
And the lights guttering out like candles in a windH
And the armies haltedH
And the train mid way on the mountainQ
And idle men chaffing across the trenchesE
And the cursing and lamentationQ
And the clamor for grain shut in the mills of the worldH
What if they stayed apartH
Inscrutably smilingB
Leaving the ground encumbered with dead wireK
And the sea to row boatsR
And the lands maroonedH
Till Time should like a paralytic sitH
A mildewed hulk above the nations squattingB
