Mama's faceA
is smooth and pale as tea rose leavesB
That ivory oval of aunt GemC
you sucked the miniature offD
had black black hair like mamaE
-
-
-
Pit it ty patF
Mama walks so fastG
street lamps jigH
without bending a legI
lights in the windowsJ
play twinkling tunesK
on crimson and blueL
bottles like bubblesM
big as balloonsK
Faster and fasterN
and pink light spurtsO
over cakes doing polkasP
in little white shirtsO
with cake princessesQ
in flounced white skirtsO
-
Pit patF
mama walks slowerN
slower and slowerN
Eyes lamps starsR
acres and acres of starsR
bells and sleepilyS
flapping feetT
You're glad mama walks slowU
It's nice to be carried alongV
up high near the starsR
that look at you with a grave great lookW

Every nightX
mama sings you to sleepY
When she sings O for the light of thine eyes DoloresZ
there's a castle on a cliffA2
and the sea roars like lionsB2
It leaps at the castleC2
and the cliff knocks it downD2
but always the seaS
shakes its flattened headE2
and gets up againF2
The castle has no roofG2
so the rain spins silvery webs in itH2
and Dolores' faceA
floats dim and beautifulC2
the way flowers do when they are drownedI2
Step by white stepJ2
she goes up the castle stairsK2
but the stair goes up into the skyL2
and the sky keeps going up tooL
and none of them ever get thereM2
-
When mama sings Ba ba black sheepY
the stars seem to shine through her voiceN2
so everything has to be stillO2
and when she has finished singingP2
her song goes up off the earthQ2
higher and higherN
till it is only as big as a tiny silver birdR2
with nothing but moonlight around itH2
