Crass rays streaming from the vestibules	A
Cafes glittering like jeweled teeth	B
High flung signs	A
Blinking yellow phosphorescent eyes	A

Like ailing virgins	A
Each out of a halo circumscribed	I
Pallidly staring	J

With no more rustle than a dropped leaf settling	J
Slovenly figures like untied parcels	A
And papers wrapped about their knees	A
Huddled one to the other	K
Cringing to the wind	L

Leaving no breach untried	M

The fountain slobbering its stone basin	N
Is louder than They	O
Flotsam of the five oceans	A
Here on this raft of the world	P

This old man's head	Q
Has found a woman's shoulder	K
The wind juggles with her shawl	D
That flaps about them like a sail	D
And splashes her red faded hair	G
Over the salt stubble of his chin	R
A light foam is on his lips	A
As though dreams surged in him	S
Breaking and ebbing away	O
And the bare boughs shuffle above him	S
And the twigs rattle like dice	A

She diffused like a broken beetle	D
Sprawls without grace	A
Her face gray as asphalt	T
Her jaws sagging as on loosened hinges	A
Shadows ply about her mouth	U
Nimble shadows out of the jigging tree	V
That dances above her its dance of dry bones	A

And the old man lifts a shaking palsied hand	W
Tucking the displaced paper about his knees	A

Acid corroding	J
Eating through worn bootsoles	A

Through boughs like cross bones	A
Pale arcs flare and shiver	K
