Faces Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCC DECCCFGHC CCCCGIICJCCKLM ICNOICPQ CRGSTUHVC

A late snow beatsA
With cold white fists upon the tenementsB
Hurriedly drawing blinds and shuttersC
Like tall old slatternsC
Pulling aprons about their headsC
-
Lights slanting out of Mott StreetD
Gibber outE
Or dribble through bar room slitsC
Anonymous shapesC
Conniving behind shuttered panesC
Caper and disappearF
Where the BoweryG
Is throbbing like a fistulaH
Back of her ice scabbed frontsC
-
Livid facesC
Glimmer in furtive doorwaysC
Or spill out of the black pockets of alleysC
Smears of faces like muddied beadsC
Making a ghastly rosaryG
The night mumbles overI
And the snow with its devilish and silken whisperI
Patrolling arcsC
Blowing shrill blasts over the Bread LineJ
Stalk them as they passC
Silent as though accouched of the darknessC
And the wind noses among themK
Like a skunkL
That roots about the heartM
-
ColderI
And the Elevated slams upon the silenceC
Like a ponderous doorN
Then all is still againO
Save for the wind fumbling overI
The emptily swaying facesC
The wind rummagingP
Like an old JewQ
-
Faces in glimmering rowsC
No sign of the abject lifeR
Not even a blasphemyG
But the spindle legs keep timeS
To a limping rhythmT
And the shadows twitch upon the snowU
ConvulsivelyH
As though death playedV
With some ungainly dollsC
