Cherry cherryA
glowing on the hearthB
bright red cherryA
When you try to pick up cherryA
Celia's shriekC
sticks in you like a pinD
-
-
-
When God throws hailstonesE
you cuddle in Celia's shawlF
and press your feet on her bellyA
high up like a stoolG
When Celia makes umbrella of her handH
Rain falls throughI
big pink spokes of her fingersJ
When wind blows Celia's gown up off her legsK
she runs under pillars of the bankL
great round pillars of the bankL
have on white stockings tooI

Celia says my fatherM
will bring me a golden bowlN
When I think of my fatherM
I cannot see himO
for the big yellow bowlN
like the moon with two handlesP
he carries in front of himO
-
-
-
Grandpa grandpaQ
Light all about youI
ginger pouring out of green jarsR
You don't believe he has gone away and left his great coatS
so you pretend you see his face up in the ceilingT
When you clap your hands and cry grandpa grandpa grandpaQ
Celia crosses herselfU

It isn't a dreamV
It comes again and againW
You hear ivy crying on steeplesP
the flames haven't caught yetX
and images screamingT
when they see red light on the liliesY
on the stained glass window of St JosephZ
The girl with the black eyes holds you tightA2
and you run and runB2
past the wild wild towersJ
and trees in the gardens tugging at their feetC2
and little frightened dollsD2
shut up in the shopsE2
crying and crying because no one stopsE2
you spin like a penny thrown out in the streetC2
Then the man clutches her by the hairF2
He always clutches her by the hairF2
His eyes stick out like spearsG2
You see her pulled back faceH2
and her black black eyesI2
lit up by the glareF2
Then everything goes outJ2
Please God don't let me dream any moreK2
of the girl with the black black eyesI2

Celia's shadow rocks and rocksL2
and mama's eyes stare out of the pillowM2
as though she had gone awayN2
and the night had come in her placeH2
as it comes in empty roomsO2
you can't bear itP2
the night threshing aboutJ2
and lashing its tail on its sidesQ2
as bold as a wolf that isn't afraidR2
and you scream at her face that is white as a stone on a graveS2
and pull it around to the lightA2
till the night draws backward the night that walks aloneT2
and goes away without endU2
Mama says I am cold Betty and shiversJ
Celia tucks the quilt about her feetC2
but I run for my little red cloakV2
because red is hot like fireM
-
-
-
I wish CeliaW2
could see the sea climb up on the skyX2
and slide off againW
Celia sayingT
I'd beg the world with youI
Celia holding on to the cabY2
hands wrenched awayN2
wind in the masts like Celia cryingT
Celia never minded if you slapped herM
when the comb made your hairs acheZ2
but though you rub your cheek against mama's handH
she has not said darling sinceA3
Now I will slap her againW
I will bite her hand till it bleedsB3
-
It is cool by the port holeN
The wet rags of the windC3
flap in your faceH2
