Vertical Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBEFGGHI

Perhaps the purpose of leaves is to concealA
the verticality of trees which we notice in DecemberB
as if for the first time row after row of dark formsC
yearning upwards And since we will be horizontalD
ourselves for so long let us now honorB
the gods of the vertical stalks of wheat whichE
to the ant must seem as high as these trees do to usF
silos and telephone poles stalagmites and skyscrapersG
but most of all these winter oaks these soft fleshed poplarsG
this birch whose bark is like roughened skin againstH
which I lean my chilled head not ready to lie downI
