The Happiest Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJIKLMNFOPFH QRSTUKHVWFXYUFIt was early May I think | A |
a moment of lilac or dogwood | B |
when so many promises are made | C |
it hardly matters if a few are broken | D |
My mother and father still hovered | E |
in the background part of the scenery | F |
like the houses I had grown up in | G |
and if they would be torn down later | H |
that was something I knew | I |
but didn't believe Our children were asleep | J |
or playing the youngest as new | I |
as the new smell of the lilacs | K |
and how could I have guessed | L |
their roots were shallow | M |
and would be easily transplanted | N |
I didn't even guess that I was happy | F |
The small irritations that are like salt | O |
on melon were what I dwelt on | P |
though in truth they simply | F |
made the fruit taste sweeter | H |
So we sat on the porch | Q |
in the cool morning sipping | R |
hot coffee Behind the news of the day | S |
strikes and small wars a fire somewhere | T |
I could see the top of your dark head | U |
and thought not of public conflagrations | K |
but of how it would feel on my bare shoulder | H |
If someone could stop the camera then | V |
if someone could only stop the camera | W |
and ask me are you happy | F |
perhaps I would have noticed | X |
how the morning shone in the reflected | Y |
color of lilac Yes I might have said | U |
and offered a steaming cup of coffee | F |
