The Happiest Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJIKLMNFOPFH QRSTUKHVWFXYUF

It was early May I thinkA
a moment of lilac or dogwoodB
when so many promises are madeC
it hardly matters if a few are brokenD
My mother and father still hoveredE
in the background part of the sceneryF
like the houses I had grown up inG
and if they would be torn down laterH
that was something I knewI
but didn't believe Our children were asleepJ
or playing the youngest as newI
as the new smell of the lilacsK
and how could I have guessedL
their roots were shallowM
and would be easily transplantedN
I didn't even guess that I was happyF
The small irritations that are like saltO
on melon were what I dwelt onP
though in truth they simplyF
made the fruit taste sweeterH
So we sat on the porchQ
in the cool morning sippingR
hot coffee Behind the news of the dayS
strikes and small wars a fire somewhereT
I could see the top of your dark headU
and thought not of public conflagrationsK
but of how it would feel on my bare shoulderH
If someone could stop the camera thenV
if someone could only stop the cameraW
and ask me are you happyF
perhaps I would have noticedX
how the morning shone in the reflectedY
color of lilac Yes I might have saidU
and offered a steaming cup of coffeeF
