Prosody 101 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLBGMNOHPP QBQH| When they taught me that what mattered most | A |
| was not the strict iambic line goose stepping | B |
| over the page but the variations | C |
| in that line and the tension produced | D |
| on the ear by the surprise of difference | E |
| I understood yet didn't understand | F |
| exactly until just now years later | G |
| in spring with the trees already lacy | H |
| and camellias blowsy with middle age | I |
| I looked out and saw what a cold front had done | J |
| to the garden sweeping in like common language | K |
| unexpected in the sensuous | L |
| extravagance of a Maryland spring | B |
| There was a dark edge around each flower | G |
| as if it had been outlined in ink | M |
| instead of frost and the tension I felt | N |
| between the expected and actual | O |
| was like that time I came to you ready | H |
| to say goodbye for good for you had been | P |
| a cold front yourself lately and as I walked in | P |
| you laughed and lifted me up in your arms | Q |
| as if I too were lacy with spring | B |
| instead of middle aged like the camellias | Q |
| and I thought so this is Poetry | H |
