Meditation By The Stove Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSM JTHUCVWXYBAZ D

I have banked the firesA
of my bodyB
into a small but steady blazeC
here in the kitchenD
where the dough has a life of its ownE
breathing under its damp clothF
like a sleeping childG
where the real child plays under the tableH
pretending the tablecloth is a tentI
practicing departures where a dimJ
brown bird dazzled by lightK
has flown into the windowpaneL
and lies stunned on the pavementM
it was never simple even for birdsN
this business of nestsO
The innocent eye sees nothing Auden saysP
repeating what the snake told EveQ
what Eve told Adam tired of gardensR
wanting the fully lived lifeS
But passion happens like an accidentM
I could let the dough spill over the rimJ
of the bowl neglecting to punch it downT
neglecting the child who waits under the tableH
the mild tears already smudging her eyesU
We grow in such haphazard waysC
Today I feel wiser than the birdV
I know the window shuts me inW
that when I open itX
the garden smells will make me restlessY
And I have banked the fires of my bodyB
into a small domestic flame for othersA
to warm their hands on for a whileZ
