into a small but steady blaze | C |
here in the kitchen | D |
where the dough has a life of its own | E |
breathing under its damp cloth | F |
like a sleeping child | G |
where the real child plays under the table | H |
pretending the tablecloth is a tent | I |
practicing departures where a dim | J |
brown bird dazzled by light | K |
has flown into the windowpane | L |
and lies stunned on the pavement | M |
it was never simple even for birds | N |
this business of nests | O |
The innocent eye sees nothing Auden says | P |
repeating what the snake told Eve | Q |
what Eve told Adam tired of gardens | R |
wanting the fully lived life | S |
But passion happens like an accident | M |
I could let the dough spill over the rim | J |
of the bowl neglecting to punch it down | T |
neglecting the child who waits under the table | H |
the mild tears already smudging her eyes | U |
We grow in such haphazard ways | C |
Today I feel wiser than the bird | V |
I know the window shuts me in | W |
that when I open it | X |
the garden smells will make me restless | Y |
And I have banked the fires of my body | B |
into a small domestic flame for others | A |
to warm their hands on for a while | Z |
