You Are Old Father William Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JGJG KLKL MNMO PQP Q

You are old father William the young man saidA
And your hair has become very whiteB
And yet you incessantly stand on your headA
Do you think at your age it is rightB
-
In my youth father William replied to his sonC
I feared it might injure the brainD
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have noneC
Why I do it again and againE
-
You are old said the youth as I mentioned beforeF
And you have grown most uncommonly fatG
Yet you turned a back somersault in at the doorF
Pray what is the reason for thatG
-
In my youth said the sage as he shook his grey locksH
I kept all my limbs very suppleI
By the use of this ointment one shilling a boxH
Allow me to sell you a coupleI
-
You are old said the youth and your jaws are too weakJ
For anything tougher than suetG
Yet you finished the goose with the bones and the beakJ
Pray how did you mange to do itG
-
In my youth said his fater I took to the lawK
And argued each case with my wifeL
And the muscular strength which it gave to my jawK
Has lasted the rest of my lifeL
-
You are old said the youth one would hardly supposeM
That your eye was as steady as everyN
Yet you balanced an eel on the tend of your noseM
What made you so awfully cleverO
-
I have answered three questions and that is enoughP
Said his father Don't give yourself airsQ
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuffP
-
Be off or I'll kick you down stairsQ
