With saddest music all day longA
She soothed her secret sorrowB
At night she sighed I fear 'twas wrongA
Such cheerful words to borrowB
Dearest a sweeter sadder songA
I'll sing to thee to morrowB
-
I thanked her but I could not sayC
That I was glad to hear itD
I left the house at break of dayC
And did not venture near itD
Till time I hoped had worn awayC
Her grief for nought could cheer itD
-
My dismal sister Couldst thou knowB
The wretched home thou keepestD
Thy brother drowned in daily woeB
Is thankful when thou sleepestD
For if I laugh however lowB
When thou'rt awake thou weepestD
-
I took my sister t'other dayD
Excuse the slang expressionE
To Sadler's Wells to see the playD
In hopes the new impressionE
Might in her thoughts from grave to gayD
Effect some slight digressionE
-
I asked three gay young dogs from townF
To join us in our follyG
Whose mirth I thought might serve to drownF
My sister's melancholyG
The lively Jones the sportive BrownF
And Robinson the jollyG
-
The maid announced the meal in tonesH
That I myself had taught herI
Meant to allay my sister's moansH
Like oil on troubled waterI
I rushed to Jones the lively JonesH
And begged him to escort herI
-
Vainly he strove with ready witD
To joke about the weatherI
To ventilate the last 'ON DIT'D
To quote the price of leatherI
She groaned Here I and Sorrow sitD
Let us lament togetherI
-
I urged You're wasting time you knowB
Delay will spoil the venisonE
My heart is wasted with my woeB
There is no rest in Venice onJ
The Bridge of Sighs she quoted lowB
From Byron and from TennysonE
-
I need not tell of soup and fishK
In solemn silence swallowedD
The sobs that ushered in each dishK
And its departure followedD
Nor yet my suicidal wishK
To BE the cheese I hollowedD
-
Some desperate attempts were madeD
To start a conversationE
Madam the sportive Brown essayedD
Which kind of recreationE
Hunting or fishing have you madeD
Your special occupationE
-
Her lips curved downwards instantlyG
As if of india rubberI
Hounds IN FULL CRY I like said sheG
Oh how I longed to snub herI
Of fish a whale's the one for meG
IT IS SO FULL OF BLUBBERI
-
The night's performance was King JohnJ
It's dull she wept and so soB
Awhile I let her tears flow onJ
She said they soothed her woe soB
At length the curtain rose uponJ
'Bombastes Furioso '-
-
In vain we roared in vain we triedD
To rouse her into laughterI
Her pensive glances wandered wideD
From orchestra to rafterI
TIER UPON TIER she said and sighedD
And silence followed afterI
