The HuntingA
-
-
The Bellman looked uffish and wrinkled his browB
If only you'd spoken beforeC
It's excessively awkward to mention it nowB
With the Snark so to speak at the doorC
We should all of us grieve as you well may believeD
If you never were met with againE
But surely my man when the voyage beganF
You might have suggested it thenE
-
It's excessively awkward to mention it nowB
As I think I've already remarkedG
And the man they called Hi replied with a sighH
I informed you the day we embarkedG
-
You may charge me with murder or want of senseI
We are all of us weak at timesJ
But the slightest approach to a false pretenceJ
Was never among my crimesJ
-
I said it in Hebrew I said it in DutchK
I said it in German and GreekL
But I wholly forgot and it vexes me muchK
That English is what you speakL
-
'Tis a pitiful tale said the Bellman whose faceJ
Had grown longer at every wordM
But now that you've stated the whole of your caseJ
More debate would be simply absurdM
-
The rest of my speech he exclaimed to his menE
You shall hear when I've leisure to speak itN
But the Snark is at hand let me tell you againE
'Tis your glorious duty to seek itN
-
To seek it with thimbles to seek it with careO
To pursue it with forks and hopeP
To threaten its life with a railway shareO
To charm it with smiles and soapP
-
For the Snark's a peculiar creature that wo'n'tQ
Be caught in a commonplace wayR
Do all that you know and try all that you don'tS
Not a chance must be wasted to dayR
-
For England expects I forbear to proceedT
'Tis a maxim tremendous but triteU
And you'd best be unpacking the things that you needT
To rig yourselves out for the fightU
-
Then the Banker endorsed a blank cheque which he crossedV
And changed his loose silver for notesJ
The Baker with care combed his whiskers and hairO
And shook the dust out of his coatsJ
-
The Boots and the Broker were sharpening a spadeW
Each working the grindstone in turnX
But the Beaver went on making lace and displayedW
No interest in the concernX
-
Though the Barrister tried to appeal to its prideY
And vainly proceeded to citeU
A number of cases in which making lacesJ
Had proved an infringement of rightU
-
The maker of Bonnets ferociously plannedZ
A novel arrangement of bowsJ
While the Billiard marker with quivering handZ
Was chalking the tip of his noseJ
-
But the Butcher turned nervous and dressed himself fineA2
With yellow kid gloves and a ruffB2
Said he felt it exactly like going to dineA2
Which the Bellman declared was all stuffB2
-
Introduce me now there's a good fellow he saidC2
If we happen to meet it togetherD2
And the Bellman sagaciously nodding his headC2
Said That must depend on the weatherD2
-
The Beaver went simply galumphing aboutE2
At seeing the Butcher so shyH
And even the Baker though stupid and stoutE2
Made an effort to wink with one eyeH
-
Be a man said the Bellman in wrath as he heardM
The Butcher beginning to sobF2
Should we meet with a Jubjub that desperate birdM
We shall need all our strength for the jobF2
