Come in and tread thou quietlyB
Within the duskinessC
This twilight thou dost seeC
Is but the moment passing Make no guessC
Upon these ragged tapestriesC
Horrid with timeD
And stained with memoriesC
The undisturbed grimeD
Of cryptic yearsC
Conceals those happeningsC
Unbrushed by recollection and unwashed by tearsC
The music moans It is the past that singsC
-
These corridors These corridors and hallsC
This change of light and gathered mysteryC
These whisperings this silent dust that pallsC
The buried gone are mine a solemn propertyC
-
Here with padded feetE
Within the nightF
I move with muffled beatE
Head bowed in shame at some foul sightF
Forever raking in some dim recessC
Peering at deeds and thoughtsC
Grey things and dead a dreadfulnessC
An ignorance a bittered passage fraughtG
With dampness and sinH
From some vile soakage All aloneI
I pause at tombs where none must enter inH
And see my name deep carved upon the stoneI
Come in Come in If thou hast half a willJ
To stay and learnK
This wilderness bestillJ
Thine asking tongue and follow me nor turnK
Upon thy trackL
My rooms My roomsC
My darling hated rooms so still so sadM
How in my dreams the tall wall loomsC
And rises in threat Mad MadM
Bestir thy limbs and follow noiselesslyJ
This way This wayN
I hear the murmur of the outside seaC
And the coming of the dayN
-
The yonder arches with their feeble strengthO
Have been my prideP
And when the lengthO
Of this main hall has diedP
Within forgetfulness will yet live longQ
And those ambitious stairs in ruined disarrayN
May still be worthy of a songQ
At Judgement DayN
These avenues of searching youthR
Wind on and wind againS
They brought no treasure just a truthR
A knowing and with knowledge painT
-
Come though with meC
Look not on here and hereU
But loiter now on this my fondest memoryC
My sweetest tearV
My ferns My fountains And my singing birdsC
And this Aye this was loveW
Oh what a place Here rang those ardent wordsC
Of youth to the wild sky aboveW
No roof impededX
The calling of her nameY
No roof was neededZ
No indiscretion here no shameY
Often often in the summer stillJ
Of night I creep within the star domed spaceC
And stand upon these stone untilJ
She comes she always comes a smile uponA2
her faceC
A smile and yet and yetB2
I sometimes wish the soothing dustC2
Would sprinkle here and I forgetB2
And all theses golden railings mould in rustC2
But still the playing waters rise and purlJ
A plaintive song singing to starsC
And all because a girlJ
Has come within the barsC
Of an existence painting all thereinH
With coloured melodiesC
And quieting that sordid dinH
With witcheriesC
These perfumed flowers here may never fadeD2
This passioned orchid and that rose s foldsC
Yon nodding violet within the shadeD2
All bear eternal blossoming that memory holdsC
Pass on though pleasant youth thou canst notE2
linger longQ
The tune has passed with time and left anF2
echoed songQ
-
But now away and keep apace with meC
Within this sorry vault in slow decayN
My earthly store of learning lies all rottinglyJ
Disused and dusty dustier every dayN
This chest unloose the lid containsC
The robes of life the masks of mindG2
Veneers and cloaks asmear with wanton stainsC
That Vice has left behindG2
Uplift that shirt of mail that saved the soulJ
And guarded well the tender bud that grewH2
And kept unsoiled the under rollJ
Of white from crime it never knewH2
I wore it constantly awhileJ
But in a youthful rashness put it byI2
And wore this undervest and with a smileJ
Of doubtful bravery stood naked to the skyI2
Uphold the garment once so white that failedJ2
To fend me from those evil thingsC
That tore these holes with claws long nailedJ2
And left it yellow with imaginingsC
Gaze on the purple garment of conceitE
Adorned with tattered trappings of a cheapK2
DisplayN
Tis meet Tis meetE
The folly still outlives the fool s decayN
-
These rooms I know not They are full of sleepK2
And haunting shapes of dreamsC
That flicker silently and creepK2
Within the darkness from the beamsC
Of our perception time long lostL2
Dreams long dreamed and never knownI
Deeds of unthought costM2
Seeds long sownI
Rooms of cloud and mistinessC
Where lurking shadows waitN2
Rooms of sorrowed shiftinessC
Breathing opiateO2
-
And so the structure stands time built of brainT
wrought stoneI
Where I have wandered and will wander yetB2
Until each boneI
Of this frail body rots the ruin falls and II2
forgetB2
But still I build each stone on rocking stoneI
I have my plans sometimes they fail A GreaterP2
MindG2
Than mine has other plans his Will be doneQ2
Until the last lone brick is linedG2
Upon the finished wholeJ
And through the trembling ether comes the callingR2
Of the soulJ
-
But go Tis time Within the tired mindG2
I feel the dawn and feel the morning windG2
