Come in and tread thou quietly	B
Within the duskiness	C
This twilight thou dost see	C
Is but the moment passing Make no guess	C
Upon these ragged tapestries	C
Horrid with time	D
And stained with memories	C
The undisturbed grime	D
Of cryptic years	C
Conceals those happenings	C
Unbrushed by recollection and unwashed by tears	C
The music moans It is the past that sings	C

These corridors These corridors and halls	C
This change of light and gathered mystery	C
These whisperings this silent dust that palls	C
The buried gone are mine a solemn property	C

Here with padded feet	E
Within the night	F
I move with muffled beat	E
Head bowed in shame at some foul sight	F
Forever raking in some dim recess	C
Peering at deeds and thoughts	C
Grey things and dead a dreadfulness	C
An ignorance a bittered passage fraught	G
With dampness and sin	H
From some vile soakage All alone	I
I pause at tombs where none must enter in	H
And see my name deep carved upon the stone	I
Come in Come in If thou hast half a will	J
To stay and learn	K
This wilderness bestill	J
Thine asking tongue and follow me nor turn	K
Upon thy track	L
My rooms My rooms	C
My darling hated rooms so still so sad	M
How in my dreams the tall wall looms	C
And rises in threat Mad Mad	M
Bestir thy limbs and follow noiselessly	J
This way This way	N
I hear the murmur of the outside sea	C
And the coming of the day	N

The yonder arches with their feeble strength	O
Have been my pride	P
And when the length	O
Of this main hall has died	P
Within forgetfulness will yet live long	Q
And those ambitious stairs in ruined disarray	N
May still be worthy of a song	Q
At Judgement Day	N
These avenues of searching youth	R
Wind on and wind again	S
They brought no treasure just a truth	R
A knowing and with knowledge pain	T

Look not on here and here	U
But loiter now on this my fondest memory	C
My sweetest tear	V
My ferns My fountains And my singing birds	C
And this Aye this was love	W
Oh what a place Here rang those ardent words	C
Of youth to the wild sky above	W
No roof impeded	X
The calling of her name	Y
No roof was needed	Z
No indiscretion here no shame	Y
Often often in the summer still	J
Of night I creep within the star domed space	C
And stand upon these stone until	J
She comes she always comes a smile upon	A2
her face	C
A smile and yet and yet	B2
I sometimes wish the soothing dust	C2
Would sprinkle here and I forget	B2
And all theses golden railings mould in rust	C2
But still the playing waters rise and purl	J
A plaintive song singing to stars	C
And all because a girl	J
Has come within the bars	C
Of an existence painting all therein	H
With coloured melodies	C
And quieting that sordid din	H
With witcheries	C
These perfumed flowers here may never fade	D2
This passioned orchid and that rose s folds	C
Yon nodding violet within the shade	D2
All bear eternal blossoming that memory holds	C
Pass on though pleasant youth thou canst not	E2
linger long	Q
The tune has passed with time and left an	F2
echoed song	Q

But now away and keep apace with me	C
Within this sorry vault in slow decay	N
My earthly store of learning lies all rottingly	J
Disused and dusty dustier every day	N
This chest unloose the lid contains	C
The robes of life the masks of mind	G2
Veneers and cloaks asmear with wanton stains	C
That Vice has left behind	G2
Uplift that shirt of mail that saved the soul	J
And guarded well the tender bud that grew	H2
And kept unsoiled the under roll	J
Of white from crime it never knew	H2
I wore it constantly awhile	J
But in a youthful rashness put it by	I2
And wore this undervest and with a smile	J
Of doubtful bravery stood naked to the sky	I2
Uphold the garment once so white that failed	J2
To fend me from those evil things	C
That tore these holes with claws long nailed	J2
And left it yellow with imaginings	C
Gaze on the purple garment of conceit	E
Adorned with tattered trappings of a cheap	K2
Display	N
Tis meet Tis meet	E
The folly still outlives the fool s decay	N

These rooms I know not They are full of sleep	K2
And haunting shapes of dreams	C
That flicker silently and creep	K2
Within the darkness from the beams	C
Of our perception time long lost	L2
Dreams long dreamed and never known	I
Deeds of unthought cost	M2
Seeds long sown	I
Rooms of cloud and mistiness	C
Where lurking shadows wait	N2
Rooms of sorrowed shiftiness	C
Breathing opiate	O2

And so the structure stands time built of brain	T

Where I have wandered and will wander yet	B2
Until each bone	I
Of this frail body rots the ruin falls and I	I2
forget	B2
But still I build each stone on rocking stone	I
I have my plans sometimes they fail A Greater	P2

Than mine has other plans his Will be done	Q2
Until the last lone brick is lined	G2
Upon the finished whole	J
And through the trembling ether comes the calling	R2
Of the soul	J
