The Diggers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACDDCC EBEBECFFCC

The diggers are digging and digging deepA
They re digging and singingB
And I m asleepA
They re digging and singing and swiftly they re swingingB
The flying earth as it falls in a heapA
And some of it scatters and falls on my headC
But the diggers dig on They can only digD
They can only sing and their eyes are bigD
Their eyes are big and heavy as leadC
They dig and they sing and they think I m deadC
-
The diggers are digging and filling the holeE
They re sighing and singingB
They pray for my soulE
I hear what they say and from where I am lyingB
I hear a new corporal calling the rollE
But the diggers dig on and fill in my bedC
They diggers dig on and they sweat and they sweatF
They sigh and they sign and their wyes are wetF
The brown earth clatters and covers my headC
Then I laugh and I laugh for they think that I m deadC
