The Attack At Dawn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCEFGFGHAHA

At every cost they said it must be doneA
They told us in the early afternoonB
We sit and wait the coming of the sunA
We sit in groups grey groups that watch the moonB
We stretch our legs and murmur half in sleepC
And touch the tips of bayonets and yarnD
Our hands are cold They strangely grope and creepC
Tugging at ends of straps We wait the dawnE
Some men come stumbling past in single fileF
And scrape the trench s side and scatter sandG
They trip and curse and go Perhaps we smileF
We wait the dawn The dawn is close at handG
A gentle rustling runs along the lineH
At every cost they said it must be doneA
A hundred eyes are staring for the signH
It s coming Look Our God s own laughing sunA
