Everything seems lost and goneA
The world seems void and I aloneB
To mourn its emptiness that am too weak toC
mournD
To mope a hermit in a broken caveE
Imprisoned and forlornD
The youthful wave that dashes on the outsideF
shoreG
And splits youth s passions on the moveless stonesH
Has failed to stir the blood that fillsI
The warrior heart I only see the bleaching bonesH
The narrow graves upon the gouged hillsI
And mope the moreG
How can the prisoned bird surmiseJ
The passages on outer airK
Or sing of Freedom to the lonely skiesJ
When Freedom is not thereK
What use is it to try high Fancy s flightL
Above the upper blueC
The dark soul is darker that the nightL
And Fancy s caged tooC
To introspect look inward on the mindM
Is gazing on a thing all bloody and uncleanN
Twere better that the soul were bright the gazerK
blindM
The beauty there and yet no beauty seenN
The haunting questions of the bruised brainO
Tease at the tired heartP
Do tattered hills still bear unburied slainO
And the far off tear drops startP
Is blood still wet upon the treesQ
Upon the grassR
Do dead grey eyes dim glazing in the breezeQ
Still stare upon the stumblers as they passR
The long long dreams that loiter in the stayS
Of sleep and hold the mind clutched fastT
Have left it trembling at the dayS
With trailing memories of the cruel pastT
How may the weary day be spent The wearyK
weekU
Choose thoughts Choose dreams What choiceV
The long mute inward voiceV
Forgets to speakU
The ears are deaf the eyes to beauty blindM
Unheeded are the laughing fields afarK
The glory of the wheeling western windM
The shivering starK
The fault Lies that with fate Or with ageW
The singing poet within his Isles of PeaceX
Is glad The sageW
Upon his mountain height But running bloodY
can t ceaseX
For him who fights till deathZ
Til smiling lips besmeared and red with foamA2
Move faintly with a feeble breathZ
In words of homeA2
Tis sad But still tis restB2
And what to showC2
A small black wound upon a dauntless breastB2
True heart and conscience as the snowC2
And he knows has fought has seenN
And now is caged without yet hears the fightL
He wonders what is done and thinks of whatD2
has beenE2
He bears the burden of the dark and cries forK
lightL
But he who prone with wounds and slow diseaseQ
Too weak to grapple with the barsF2
The bars that bind encaged by the surroundingG2
seasQ
Can only gaze upon his scarsF2
