This Hadji Murad was Shamil's naib, famous for his exploits, who used never to ride out without his banner and some dozens of murids, who caracoled and showed off before him. Now wrapped in a hood and burka, from under which protruded a rifle, he rode, a fugitive with one murid only, trying to attract as little attention as possible and peering with his quick black eyes into the faces of those he met on his way. -- Note: Tolstoy's last novel.

Leo Tolstoy Books, Leo Tolstoy poetry book Selected Short Stories Authors: Leo Tolstoy
Publisher: Courier Dover Publications
Published Date: 2017-12-13
Categories: Literary Collections
It is universally acknowledged that Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, was as much a master of the short story as of the full-length novel. This original collection, which features some of his most hard-to-find tales, will enchant longtime enthusiasts of Tolstoy's work as well as new readers. "The Forged Coupon" traces how an act of deception leads to both murder and redemption. "After the Dance" depicts an army deserter's punishment and explores the subjective nature of opinions on good and evil. "Alyosha the Pot" profiles a simple man content to live according to others' expectations. "A Prisoner in the Caucasus" undermines the romantic conceptions associated with the region in particular and with war in general. "The Bear Hunt" forms a cautionary tale of acting in anger; "Two Old Men" suggests that the best way to honor God is to love and care for other people; additional stories include "The Raid," "The Snow-Storm," and "The Godson."

Leo Tolstoy Books, Leo Tolstoy poetry book Anna Karenina Authors: Tolstoy, Leo

Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy's negative views of Russian volunteers going to fight in Serbia); therefore, the novel's first complete appearance was in book form in 1878. Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel. Fyodor Dostoyevsky declared it "flawless as a work of art." His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style," and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written.". The novel remains popular, as demonstrated by a 2007 poll of 125 contemporary authors in Time, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest book ever written."

The Russian novelist and moral philosopher Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) ranks as one of the world s great writers, and his 'War and Peace' has been called the greatest novel ever written. But during his long lifetime, Tolstoy also wrote enough shorter works to fill many volumes. The message in all his stories is presented with such humour that the reader hardly realises that it is strongly didactic. These stories give a snapshot of Russia and its people in the late nineteenth century.

Although Tolstoy's fame rests on his novels, he was also a prolific dramatist; yet this part of his oeuvre has been consistently neglected by scholars and readers alike. Because the plays are satirical, didactic, and colored by complex peasant dialect, earlier translations have been flawed. Now the noted Slavic philologist Marvin Kantor and Tatiana Tulchinsky have prepared the first complete English translations of Tolstoy's plays. These latter pieces provide fascinating insight into Tolstoy's life and his development as a writer. Volume One includes: A Family of Gentlefolk A Practical Man An Uncle's Blessing Free Love An Infected Family The Nihilist Dramatization of the Legend about Aggeus The First Moonshiner

Maude's excellent translation of Tolstoy's treatise on the emotionalist theory of art was the first unexpurgated version of the work to appear in any languages. More than ninety years later this work remains, as Vincent Tomas observed, one of the most rigorous attacks on formalism and on the doctrine of art for art's sake ever written. Tomas's Introduction makes this the edition of choice for students of aesthetics and anyone with philosophical interests.

Eugene Field Poem
Suppose
 by Eugene Field

And by your side your sweetheart sate;
Suppose you noticed by and by
The distance 'twixt you were too great;
Now tell me, dear, what would you do?
I know-and so do you.

And when (so comfortably placed)
...
