Winter Poem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRQQ SH

Tonight the wind gnaws with teeth of glassA
The jackdaw shivers in caged branches of ironB
The stars have talonsC
There is hunger in the mouth of vole and badgerD
Silver agonies of breath in the nostril of the foxE
Ice on the rabbit s pawF
Tonight has no moon no food for the pilgrimG
The fruit tree is bare the rose bush a thornH
And the ground is bitter with stonesI
But the mole sleeps and the hedgehog lies curled in a womb of leavesJ
And the bean and the wheat seed hug their germs in the earthK
And a stream moves under the iceL
Tonight there is no moonM
But a star opens like a trumpet over the deadN
And tonight in a nest of ruins the blessed babe is laidO
And the fir tree warms to a bloom of candlesP
And the child lights his lantern and stares at his tinsel toyQ
And our hearts and hearths smoulder with live ashesR
In the blood of our grief the cold earth is suckledQ
In our agony the womb convulses its seedQ
And in the last cry of anguishS
The child s first breath is bornH
