Town Owl Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHCIJFKLMNOCPC QRSCOn eves of cold when slow coal fires | A |
rooted in basements burn and branch | B |
brushing with smoke the city air | C |
When quartered moons pale in the sky | D |
and neons glow along the dark | E |
like deadly nightshade on a briar | F |
Above the muffled traffic then | G |
I hear the owl and at his note | H |
I shudder in my private chair | C |
For like an auger he has come | I |
to roost among our crumbling walls | J |
his blooded talons sheathed in fur | F |
Some secret lure of time it seems | K |
has called him from his country wastes | L |
to hunt a newer wasteland here | M |
And where the candlabra swung | N |
bright with the dancers thousand eyes | O |
now his black hooded pupils stare | C |
And where the silk shoed lovers ran | P |
with dust of diamonds in their hair | C |
he opens now his silent wing | Q |
And like a stroke of doom drops down | R |
and swoops across the empty hall | S |
and plucks a quick mouse off the stair | C |
