| rooted in basements burn and branch | B |
| brushing with smoke the city air | C |
| When quartered moons pale in the sky | D |
| and neons glow along the dark | E |
| like deadly nightshade on a briar | F |
| Above the muffled traffic then | G |
| I hear the owl and at his note | H |
| I shudder in my private chair | C |
| For like an auger he has come | I |
| to roost among our crumbling walls | J |
| his blooded talons sheathed in fur | F |
| Some secret lure of time it seems | K |
| has called him from his country wastes | L |
| to hunt a newer wasteland here | M |
| And where the candlabra swung | N |
| bright with the dancers thousand eyes | O |
| now his black hooded pupils stare | C |
| And where the silk shoed lovers ran | P |
| with dust of diamonds in their hair | C |
| he opens now his silent wing | Q |
| And like a stroke of doom drops down | R |
| and swoops across the empty hall | S |
| and plucks a quick mouse off the stair | C |
