And the grass is scorched and white | B |
But the sand is passed and the march is done | A |
We are camping here to night | B |
I sit in the shade of the Temple walls | C |
While the cadenced water evenly falls | C |
And a peacock out of the Jungle calls | C |
To another on yonder tomb | D |
Above half seen in the lofty gloom | D |
Strange works of a long dead people loom | D |
Obscene and savage and half effaced | B |
An elephant hunt a musicians' feast | B |
And curious matings of man and beast | B |
What did they mean to the men who are long since dust | B |
Whose fingers traced | B |
In this arid waste | B |
These rioting twisted figures of love and lust | B |
- | |
Strange weird things that no man may say | E |
Things Humanity hides away | E |
Secretly done | A |
Catch the light of the living day | E |
Smile in the sun | A |
Cruel things that man may not name | F |
Naked here without fear or shame | F |
Laughed in the carven stone | G |
- | |
Deep in the Temple's innermost Shrine is set | B |
Where the bats and shadows dwell | H |
The worn and ancient Symbol of Life at rest | B |
In its oval shell | H |
By which the men who of old the land possessed | B |
Represented their Great Destroying Power | I |
I cannot forget | B |
That just as my life was touching its fullest flower | I |
Love came and destroyed it all in a single hour | I |
Therefore the dual Mystery suits me well | H |
- | |
Sitting alone | G |
The tank's deep water is cool and sweet | B |
Soothing and fresh to the wayworn feet | B |
Dreaming under the Tamarind shade | B |
One silently thanks the men who made | B |
So green a place in this bitter land | B |
Of sunburnt sand | B |
- | |
The peacocks scream and the grey Doves coo | J |
Little green talkative Parrots woo | J |
And small grey Squirrels with fear askance | K |
At alien me in their furtive glance | K |
Come shyly with quivering fur to see | L |
The stranger under their Tamarind tree | L |
Daylight dies | M |
The Camp fires redden like angry eyes | M |
The Tents show white | B |
In the glimmering light | B |
Spirals of tremulous smoke arise to the purple skies | M |
And the hum of the Camp sounds like the sea | L |
Drifting over the sand to me | L |
Afar in the Desert some wild voice sings | N |
To a jangling zither with minor strings | N |
And under the stars growing keen above | O |
I think of the thing that I love | O |
- | |
A beautiful thing alert serene | P |
With passionate dreaming wistful eyes | M |
Dark and deep as mysterious skies | M |
Seen from a vessel at sea | L |
Alas you drifted away from me | L |
And Time and Space have rushed in between | P |
But they cannot undo the Thing that has been | Q |
Though it never again may be | L |
You were mine from dusk until dawning light | B |
For the perfect whole of that bygone night | B |
You belonged to me | L |
- | |
They say that Love is a light thing | R |
A foolish thing and a slight thing | R |
A ripe fruit rotten at core | S |
They speak in this futile fashion | A |
To me who am wracked with passion | A |
Tormented beyond compassion | A |
For ever and ever more | S |
- | |
They say that Possession lessens a lover's delight | B |
As radiant mornings fade into afternoon | T |
I held what I loved in my arms for many a night | B |
Yet ever the morning lightened the sky too soon | T |
- | |
Beyond our tents the sands stretch level and far | U |
Around this little oasis of Tamarind trees | V |
A curious Eastern fragrance fills the breeze | V |
From the ruinous Temple garden where roses are | U |
- | |
I dream of the rose like perfume that fills your hair | W |
Of times when my lips were free of your soft closed eyes | M |
While down in the tank the waters ripple and rise | M |
And the flying foxes silently cleave the air | W |
- | |
The present is subtly welded into the past | B |
My love of you with the purple Indian dusk | X |
With its clinging scent of sandal incense and musk | X |
And withering jasmin flowers | Y |
My eyes grow dim and my senses fail at last | B |
While the lonely hours | Y |
Follow each other silently one by one | A |
Till the night is almost done | A |
- | |
Then weary and drunk with dreams with my garments damp | Z |
And heavy with dew I wander towards the camp | Z |
Tired with a brain in which fancy and fact are blent | B |
I stumble across the ropes till I reach my tent | B |
And then to rest To ensweeten my sleep with lies | M |
To dream I lie in the light of your long lost eyes | M |
My lips set free | L |
To love and linger over your soft loose hair | W |
To dream I lay your delicate beauty bare | W |
To solace my fevered eyes | M |
Ah if my life might end in a night like this | A2 |
Drift into death from dreams of your granted kiss | A2 |
