I saw a tiny GodA
SittingB
Under a bright blue umbrellaC
That had white tasselsD
And forked ribs of goldE
Below him His little worldF
Lay open to the sunG
The shadow of His hatH
Lay upon a cityI
When he stretched forth His handJ
A lake became a dark trembleK
When he kicked up His footL
It became night in the mountain passesD
-
But thou art smallM
There are gods far greater than thouN
They rise and fallM
The tumbling gods of the seaI
Can thy heart heave such sighsD
Such hollow savage criesD
Such windy breathO
Such groaning deathO
And can thy arm enfoldE
The oldE
The coldE
The changeless dreadful placesD
Where the herdsD
Of horned sea monstersD
And the screaming birdsD
Gather togetherP
From those silent menQ
That lie in the penQ
Of our pearly prisonsD
Canst thou hunt thy preyR
Like us canst thou stayR
Awaiting thine hourP
And then rise like a towerP
And crash and shatterP
-
There are neither trees nor bushesD
In my countryI
Said the tiny GodA
But there are streamsD
And waterfallsD
And mountain peaksD
Covered with lovely weedS
There are little shores and safe harboursD
Caves for cool and plains for sun and windT
Lovely is the sound of the riversD
Lovely the flashing brightnessD
Of the lovely peaksD
I am contentU
-
But Thy kingdom is smallM
Said the God of the SeaD
Thy kingdom shall fallM
I shall not let thee beD
Thou art proudV
With a loudV
Pealing of laughterP
He rose and coveredW
The tiny God's landJ
With the tip of his handJ
With the curl of his fingersD
And afterP
-
The tiny GodA
Began to cryX
