To God The Father Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJEEKLMNEBN JOPQCRSETB

To the little pitiful God I make my prayerA
The God with the long grey beardB
And flowing robe fastened with a hempen girdleC
Who sits nodding and muttering on the all too big throneD
of HeavenE
What a long long time dear God since you set theF
stars in their placesG
Girded the earth with the sea and invented the day andH
nightI
And longer the time since you looked through the blueJ
window of HeavenE
To see your children at play in a gardenE
Now we are all stronger than you and wiser and moreK
arrogantL
In swift procession we pass you byM
Who is that marionette nodding and mutteringN
On the all too big throne of HeavenE
Come down from your place Grey BeardB
We have had enough of your play actingN
-
It is centuries since I believed in youJ
But to day my need of you has come backO
I want no rose coloured futureP
No books of learning no protestations and denialsQ
I am sick of this ugly scrambleC
I am tired of being pulled aboutR
O God I want to sit on your kneesS
On the all too big throne of HeavenE
And fall asleep with my hands tangled in your greyT
beardB
