The further the little girl leaped and ranA
The further she longed to beB
The white white fields of jonquil flowersC
Danced up as high as her kneeB
And flashed and sparkled before her eyesD
Until she could hardly seeB
So into the wood went sheB
-
It was quiet in the woodE
It was solemn and graveF
A sound like a waveF
Sighed in the tree topsG
And then sighed no moreH
But she was braveF
And the sky showed throughI
A bird's egg blueI
And she sawJ
A tiny path that was running awayK
Over the hills to who can sayK
She ran tooI
But then the path brokeL
Then the path endedM
And wouldn't be mendedN
-
A little old manA
Sat on the edgeO
Hugging the hedgeO
He had a fireP
And two eggs in a panA
And a paper pokeL
Of pepper and saltQ
So she came to a haltQ
To watch and admireR
Cunning and nimble was heB
May I help if I can little old manA
Bravo he saidS
You may dine with meB
I've two old eggsT
From two white hensU
and a loaf from a kind ladieS
Some fresh nutmegsU
Some cutlet endsU
In pink and white paper frillsU
And I've gotS
A little hot potS
From the town between the hillsU
-
He nodded his headS
And made her a signV
To sit under the sprayK
Of a trailing vineV
-
But when the little girl joined her handsU
And said the grace she had learned to sayK
The little old man gave two dreadful squealsU
And she just saw the flash of his smoking heelsU
As he tumbled tumbledS
With his two old eggsU
From two white hensU
His loaf from a kind ladieS
The fresh nutmegsU
The cutlet endsU
In the pink and white paper frillsU
And away rumbledS
The little hot potS
So much too hotS
From the ton between the hillsU
