Vigil Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE GHIJ KLKL MNMN OPQPAt night when all the house is still | A |
Wide waked the chairs and tables come | B |
And yawn and stretch their limbs until | A |
The maids appear with pan and broom | C |
- | |
Through the dim hours they creak and groan | D |
Their laughter plays with tyrant Man | E |
Shaken with stiff derision | F |
For his pretensions and his span | E |
- | |
Where's then their willing servitude | G |
Meek slaves for their creator's use | H |
They make a mock of flesh and blood | I |
That passes with a morning's dews | J |
- | |
The heart that once leaped in the tree | K |
Yet lives in the fantastic shapes | L |
That foolish Man hath made to be | K |
But see how wide yon cupboard gapes | L |
- | |
With ' Yours' and 'Mine' they make great sport | M |
Who saw us come and see us go | N |
And will be when no least report | M |
Of us but what a stone can show | N |
- | |
When ghosts and owlets flit abroad | O |
The furniture's awake aware | P |
The floor complaining of its load | Q |
And what a creaking of the stair | P |
