The Young Soldier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEF GGHI JJKK HHGG

Since you were so young child I shallA
Not fear your noon or even fallB
Nor dread you are taken unawaresC
Nor weary Heaven with many prayersC
-
I shall not wake at night afraidD
Of where your darling head is laidD
Nor say 'He finds the wind too roughE
Dear God ' for now the wind's left offF
-
I shall have ease though lightnings leapG
Nor hear the thunder in my sleepG
Nor dread the crying of the seasH
Nor any mountain precipiceI
-
God pity her who lies awakeJ
Unquiet for some darling sakeJ
Soft sleeps my little son to nightK
Where many stars make candlelightK
-
His sword is laid beside his kneesH
God knows my little son hath easeH
And I his mother may go sleepG
And pray for them who wake and weepG
