The Vestal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFH IJIJ KLKL MNON

She goes unwedded all her daysA
Because some man she never knewB
Her destined mate has won his baysA
Passed the low door of darkness throughB
-
Sometimes she has a wild surmiseC
Of what dear name he used to haveD
And what the colour of his eyesC
And was he gay or was he graveE
-
Or if his hair was brown or goldF
Or if his voice was low and clearG
To tell his love with never toldF
To hers or any woman's earH
-
His voice is lost upon the windI
And when the rain beats on her heartJ
His eyes elude her warm and kindI
Where the dim shadows steal apartJ
-
What of their children all unbornK
What of the house they should have builtL
She wanders through her days forlornK
The untasted cup of joy is spiltL
-
She lives unwedded as for himM
He sleeps too sound for any fretN
At their lost kisses or the dreamO
Of the poor girl he never metN
