WHAT of Louvain and of RheimsA
Made for God by man What thenB
Here be temples more than man'sA
Wrought by God for His own menB
-
-
Scattered in the rain and frostC
Marred of beauty there they beD
Temples of the Holy GhostE
Broken ruined piteouslyF
-
-
Bodies all so finely wroughtG
Cunning deftness shaped them wellF
These God's ultimate loving thoughtG
For His Spirit's citadelF
-
-
Beautiful from head to footH
Young dear darlings all unflawedH
For their mother's kiss What bruteH
Dares deface the image of GodH
-
-
Oh the Temple's down all marredH
Gay and golden boys must lieF
Bitter sweet as spikenardH
Is the old name we called them byF
-
-
Hush God's Temple in its fallF
Breaks to set the spirit freeD
From the golden cage and thrallF
Into heaven winged libertyD
-
-
From the cage the bird is flownI
Sings so high above our sphereJ
Hush be never a sigh or moanI
The fledged bird flies without fearJ
-
-
All our loves are gathered inK
Every gay and golden ladH
On new raiment white and cleanL
They behold God and are gladH
