The Secret Foe Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFH HIHI JKJK LMNM

When now to battle he shall rideA
The bravest of the braveB
Joan the Maid be by his sideA
And Michael quick to saveB
-
Not against man's most fell deviceC
The shell the gas the mineD
These he shall meet with steady eyesE
And courage half divineD
-
Oh not the gaping wounds and redF
And not the tortured senseG
And not the dying and the deadF
And his own impotenceH
-
But when the joy of battle faintsH
And his hot blood grows chillI
Be near him all ye soldier saintsH
Lest Satan work him illI
-
Lest in the hour of his great fightJ
This foe should him assailK
The enemy that creeps by nightJ
Strike through his coat of mailK
-
Sebastian of the arrows hasteL
Michael and the White MaidM
Lest in his splendid hour at lastN
The soldier be afraidM
