RHEIMS is down in fire and smokeA
The hour of God is at the strokeA
-
Round and round the ruined placeB
Jesu Mary give us graceB
-
There are two riders clad in mailC
Silver as the moon paleC
-
One is tall as a knight's spearD
The younger one is lowlierD
-
Small and slim and like a maidE
Steeds and riders cast no shadeE
-
Who are then these cavaliersF
There was a sound as Heaven dropt tearsG
-
Who are these that ride so lightH
Soundless in the flaming lightH
-
Where Rheims burns that was givenI
By France to Mary Queen of HeavenI
-
O our Rheims our Rheims is downJ
Naught is left of her renownJ
-
Hist what sound is in the breezeK
Like the sighing of forest treesK
-
Or a great wind or an armyL
Or the waves of the wild seaL
-
The tall knight rides fierce and fastM
To the sound of a trumpet blastM
-
The little knight in fire and flameN
Slender and soft as a dameN
-
Rides and is not far behindO
His long hair floats on the windO
-
And ever the tramp of chivalryL
Comes like the sound of the seaL
-
This is Michael rides abroadP
Prince of the army of GodQ
-
And this like a lily arrayedE
Is Joan the blessed MaidE
-
Rheims is down in fire and smokeA
And the hour of God's at the strokeA
