The Perfect Playmate whither does he strayB
That now no more his feet come up this wayB
That rang so blithe upon the nursery floorC
Wild games and laughter Now the little sonD
Listens and longs and his small world's undoneD
The Perfect Playmate will return no moreC

Who else made holidays of rainy daysE
Who told such marvels by the firelight blazeE
King of misrule when Christmas frosts were hoarC
But now the black gowned mother's tears will flowF
Whether her little son be good or noF
The Perfect Playmate will return no moreC
-
Who built the sands dug deep was never lothG
Nor ever tired was strong enough for bothH
Home on his shoulders a small drowsy head boreC
Was ever smiling The boy keeps apartI
A gay young smiling father in his heartI
The Perfect Playmate will return no moreC
-
No more no more Himself a boy he goesJ
Beyond the uttermost peaks the eternal snowsJ
Light on his young brown head from an open doorC
His youth unwithered smiling all the wayB
Into the land of youth the Spring of DayB
The Perfect Playmate will return no moreC
