Lest he miss other children loA
His angel is his playfellowA
A riotous angel two years oldB
With wings of rose and curls of goldB
-
There on the nursery floor togetherC
They play when it is rainy weatherC
Building brick castles with much painD
Only to knock them down againE
-
Two golden heads together lookF
An hour long o'er a picture bookF
Or tired of being good and stillA
They play at horses with good willA
-
And when the boy laughs you shall hearG
Another laughter silver clearH
Sweeter than music of the skiesI
Or harps or birds of ParadiseJ
-
Two golden heads one pillow pressK
Two rosebuds shut for heavinessK
The wings of one are round the otherC
Lest chill befall his tender brotherC
-
All day with forethought mild and graveL
The little angel's quick to saveL
And still outruns with tender hasteM
The adventurous feet that go too fastN
-
From draughts from fire from cold and stingsK
Wraps him within his gauzy wingsK
And knows his father's pride and sharesK
His happy mother's tears and prayersK
