The Old Soldier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CACA DCDC

Lest the young soldiers be strange in heavenA
God bids the old soldier they all adoredB
Come to Him and wait for them clean new shrivenA
A happy doorkeeper in the House of the LordB
-
Lest it abash them the strange new splendourC
Lest it affright them the new robes cleanA
Here's an old face now long tried and tenderC
A word and a hand clasp as they troop inA
-
'My boys ' he greets them and heaven is homelyD
He their great captain in days gone o'erC
Dear is the friend's face honest and comelyD
Waiting to welcome them by the strange doorC
