St Austin going in thoughtA
Along the sea sands grayB
Into another world was caughtC
And Carthage far awayB
-
He saw the City of GodD
Hang in the saffron skyE
And this was holy ground he trodD
Where mortals come not nighE
-
He saw pale spires aglowF
Houses of heavenly sheenG
All in a world of rose and snowF
A sea of gold and greenG
-
There amid ParadiseH
The saint was rapt awayB
From unillumined sands and skiesI
And floor of muddy clayB
-
His soul took wings and flewJ
Forgetting mortal stainK
Upon the track of that bright crewJ
That homed to heaven againL
-
Forgetting mortal dearthM
It seized on heavenly thingsN
Till it was cast again to earthM
Because it had not wingsN
-
Because the Three in OneO
He could not understandP
Baffled and beaten and undoneO
He gazed o'er sea and landP
-
Then by a little poolQ
A lovely child he sawR
A harmless thing and beautifulS
And yet so full of aweT
-
That with a curved sea shellU
Held in his rosy handP
Had scooped himself a little wellU
Within the yielding sandP
-
And to and fro went heV
Between it and the waveW
Bearing his shell filled with the seaV
To find a sandy graveW
-
'What is it that you doJ
You lovely boy and bold '-
'I empty out the ocean blueJ
You man so wise and oldX
-
'See you how in this cupY
I bind the great sea's girth '-
'Ah no the gray sands suck it upY
Your cup is little worthM
-
'Now put your play asideZ
And let the ocean beV
Tell me your name O violet eyedZ
That empty out the seaV
-
'What lineage high and fineA2
Is yours O kingly boyB2
That sure art sprung of royal lineA2
A people's hope and joy '-
-
'Austin as you have saidC2
A crown my Sire doth wearD2
My mother was a royal maidE2
And yet went cold and bare '-
-
He shook his golden curlsF2
A scornful laugh laughed heV
'The night that I was born the churlsF2
They would not shelter meV
-
'Only the ox and assF2
The night that I was bornG2
Made me a cradle of the grassF2
And watched by me till mornG2
-
'The night that I was bornG2
The ass and ox aloneH2
Betwixt the midnight and the mornG2
Knelt down upon the stoneH2
-
'The bitter night I cameI2
Each star sang in its sphereJ2
Now riddle riddle me my nameI2
My Austin tried and dear '-
-
Austin is on his faceF2
Before that vision brightK2
'My Lord what dost Thou in this placeF2
With such a sinful wight '-
-
'I come not here in wrathL2
But I come here in loveM2
My Austin skilled in life and deathN2
Thy vanity to proveO2
-
'Mortal yet over boldX
To fly where th' eagle fliesF2
As soon this cup the sea will holdX
As thou My MysteriesF2
-
'Patience a little yetP2
And thou shalt be with MeV
And in thy soul's small cup unmeetP2
Myself will pour the sea '-
-
When Austin raised his headP2
No child was there besideP2
But in the cup the Child had madeP2
There swelled the rising tideP2
