The Golden Boy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK LMLN OPOP IQIQ

IN times of peace so clean and brightA
And with a new washed morning faceB
He walked Pall Mall a goodly sightA
The finished flower of all the raceB
-
Or through Bond Street and PiccadillyC
Went spick and span without a soilD
As careless as the July lilyC
That spins not neither does she toilD
-
He took his soldiering as sportE
And beauteous in his mufti stirredF
Romance i' the simple female sortE
That loves a guardsman or a lordG
-
And now knee deep in muddy waterH
Unwashed unshaven see him goI
His garments stained with mud and slaughterH
Would break the heart of Savile RowI
-
The danger's in his blood like wineJ
The old heroic passion leapsK
The son of the mighty fighting lineJ
Goes glad whatever woman weepsK
-
He plays the game winning or losingL
As in the playing fields at homeM
This picnic's nothing of his choosingL
But since it's started let it comeN
-
He lives his hour with keenest zestO
And midst the flying death he sparesP
A laugh to the light heart schoolboy jestO
Mingled with curses and with prayersP
-
Gay as at Eton or at HarrowI
Counts battles as by goals and runsQ
God keep him from Death's flying arrowI
To give his England fighting sonsQ
