The Broken Soldier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH

The broken soldier sings and whistles day to darkA
He's but the remnant of a man maimed and half blindB
But the soul they could not harm goes singing like the larkA
Like the incarnate Joy that will not be confinedB
-
The Lady at the Hall has given him a light taskC
He works in the gardens as busy as a beeD
One hand is but a stump and his face a pitted maskC
The gay soul goes singing like a bird set freeD
-
Whistling and singing like a linnet on wingsE
The others stop to listen leaning on the spadeF
Whole men and comely they fret at little thingsE
The soul of him's singing like a thrush in a gladeF
-
Hither and thither hopping like Robin on the grassG
The soul in the broken man is beautiful and braveH
And while he weeds the pansies and the bright hours passG
The bird caught in the cage whistles its joyous staveH
